Global R&D
Companies internationalize R&D for a variety of reason, only some of which are conducive for innovation, and even those are valid only for some time. However, once R&D infrastructure is in place, these units -- R&D centers, NPD teams, internal venture teams, etc. -- develop the seeds for new technologies and innovations that develop new and unpredictable business opportunities for their parent companies.
In our research on global R&D we investigate how companies expand R&D globally, what motives and drives them strategically, and how executing organizations respond to and mature around those efforts. We have build, and continue to build, a unique database of global R&D centers, currently almost 9,000 R&D centers strong, which we use for comparative analysis to answer questions such as:
- Which industries drive R&D internationalization ahead of other industries?
- How do countries absorb and react to inbound R&D internationalization?
- Which countries tend to internationalize into which other countries -- and when?
- Are there country-specific characteristics of firm-level internationalization?
- What are external factors influencing country attractiveness for inbound R&D FDI?
- How do small and mid-sized firms internationalize R&D and innovation? (weblink to example project)
- How do individual R&D centers force innovation network changes?
- Under which conditions to local R&D organizations leapfrog their organizational performance to greater innovation?
- Etc.
